Boron carbide has good chemical stability and is resistant to acid and alkali corrosion. CO gas has almost no effect on B4C, and H2 slightly corrodes B4C at about 1200. Cold chemical reagents do not corrode boron carbide, but hot oxidizing acids such as HNO3, H2SO4 and HClO4 oxidize boron carbide. In moist air, boron carbide will absorb oxygen to form B2O3, HbO3 and H3bO3, but it is not eroded by water. Boron carbide is also a p-type semiconductor material, which can maintain semiconductor properties even at very high temperatures.
