Boron carbide has high neutron absorption capacity, including high neutron capture cross section and wide capture energy spectrum. The thermal cross section of B10 is as high as 3 47×10-24cm2, second only to Gd, Sm, Cd and a few other elements. However, boron carbide has low cost, does not produce radioactive isotopes, low secondary ray energy, and good corrosion resistance and thermal stability. So it is becoming more and more popular in the nuclear industry. Its main applications include :(1) mixing B104C powder and graphite powder to make boron carbon brick, used outside the reactor, to prevent the leakage of radioactive materials; (2) The B104C powder is pressed into products at high temperature to be used as a reactor control rod to control the reactor reaction speed; (3) the B104C powder is pressed into products at high temperature to be the shielding material of the reactor and to absorb radioactive substances; (4) Atmospheric pressure sintering process is adopted to burn B104C powder into blocks for reactor shielding material.
